How the Music City Loop tunnel system is being built, where it is planned to go, and what the public record says today.

What is the Nashville tunnel project?

The Music City Loop is Nashville's major underground transportation project being developed by The Boring Company. The planned system uses dedicated tunnels and all-electric vehicles to connect downtown Nashville, BNA and additional destinations.

How large is the planned network?

The Boring Company said in August 2026 that its executed Tennessee permit and lease authorize approximately 25 miles of tunnel within state right-of-way. That figure describes authorized corridor, not 25 completed miles of tunnel.

The company also said more than 40 stations were in various stages of planning and design with property owners, suggesting a network larger than the original downtown-to-airport concept.

Where will the tunnels go?

Public descriptions include a downtown-to-BNA connection and a Lower Broadway-to-West End corridor. Individual branches, private-property connections and final alignments continue to develop as station agreements and permits advance.

Is tunneling underway?

Yes. Tennessee cleared the state right-of-way lease and enhanced grading permit in February 2026, and The Boring Company later reported active tunneling in Nashville. Construction status varies by segment, and station work remains a separate part of the buildout.

How is it different from rail?

The Loop model is designed around point-to-point vehicle trips rather than trains stopping at every station. That operating model allows smaller stations and direct trips, but final Nashville operating details are still developing.
